CVE-2021-46643: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley V...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley View 10.15.0.75. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of DGN files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15515.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Bentley View 10.15.0.75 can be compromised when a user opens a malicious DGN file or visits a malicious page. The flaw could let an attacker run code as that user. This is most relevant to engineering or CAD workstations handling external design files.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority workstation risk for design and engineering groups. It is not described as remotely exploitable without user action, but successful exploitation could give an attacker code execution on a business-critical endpoint.

Technical view

The issue is a stack-based buffer overflow in DGN file parsing caused by missing length validation before copying user-controlled data. It is tracked as CWE-121, CVSS 7.8 high, and ZDI-CAN-15515. Exploitation requires user interaction and can lead to code execution in the current process context.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to endpoints running Bentley View 10.15.0.75, especially users who receive DGN files from outside parties or browse file-sharing/web content related to design files.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Public advisories describe a malicious file or page scenario requiring the target user to interact with attacker-controlled content.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports affected product/version, DGN parser location, CWE-121, CVSS 7.8, and user-interaction requirement. The provided bundle does not identify a fixed version, exploit availability, or active exploitation, so remediation should follow Bentley’s advisory rather than assumed patch details.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Bentley advisory BE-2021-0009 for vendor remediation guidance.
  • Prioritize updating or replacing Bentley View 10.15.0.75 where vendor guidance applies.
  • Restrict opening DGN files from untrusted sources until remediation is complete.
  • Use email and web controls to reduce delivery of suspicious design files.
  • Consider isolating high-risk CAD workstations that process external files.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory endpoints for Bentley View 10.15.0.75 installations.
  • Identify users who handle external or partner-supplied DGN files.
  • Confirm vendor guidance has been applied on affected workstations.
  • Review endpoint telemetry for unexpected Bentley View child processes or crashes.
  • Document compensating controls where upgrades are not yet complete.
