CVE-2021-46611: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of B...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of JP2 images. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15405.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-46611 is an information-disclosure flaw in Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. A victim must open malicious content or visit a malicious page. The business risk is mainly workstation compromise support: leaked memory could help an attacker chain other bugs, but the cited CVSS rating is low.

Executive priority

Treat this as normal patch-cycle work unless affected users routinely process untrusted project files. It is low severity by CVSS, but still relevant because memory disclosure can support broader attack chains against engineering workstations.

Technical view

The flaw is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in JP2 image parsing. Improper validation of user-supplied data can read past an allocated buffer, disclosing sensitive information. ZDI notes it may be combined with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the current process context.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to environments running Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80, especially users who receive or open JP2 images, CAD files, links, or project content from external parties. This is a client-side exposure, not an unauthenticated internet-facing service issue based on the provided sources.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Exploitation requires user interaction: the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The sources describe potential chaining with other vulnerabilities, not standalone remote code execution.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are version-specific affected scope and limited public detail in the bundle. Do not assume active exploitation, additional affected Bentley products, or a specific fix beyond checking Bentley guidance. Validation should focus on version inventory and untrusted-file exposure.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory MicroStation CONNECT installations and identify version 10.16.0.80.
  • Review Bentley BE-2021-0008 for vendor-approved update or mitigation guidance.
  • Restrict opening JP2 files and project content from untrusted sources.
  • Prioritize remediation for teams handling external CAD or image submissions.
  • Use endpoint monitoring for suspicious MicroStation crashes or file-handling anomalies.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed MicroStation CONNECT versions across engineering workstations.
  • Check whether JP2-handling workflows accept files from external sources.
  • Review endpoint telemetry for MicroStation crashes around JP2 or image parsing.
  • Verify remediation status against Bentley advisory BE-2021-0008.
  • Document any compensating controls for users who cannot update promptly.
