CVE-2021-46610: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of B...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of JT files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15404.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-46610 affects Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. A malicious JT file or page can cause the application to read beyond a buffer and disclose sensitive information. User interaction is required. Public sources provided do not show active exploitation, and CISA KEV status is false.

Executive priority

Treat as low priority unless MicroStation users routinely process externally supplied JT files. Address during normal patch cycles, with faster action for high-trust engineering workstations handling third-party design files.

Technical view

The flaw is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in JT file parsing caused by insufficient validation of user-supplied data. CVSS 3.0 is 3.3, with low confidentiality impact and no direct integrity or availability impact. Sources state it could help achieve code execution only when chained with other vulnerabilities.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in engineering or design environments running MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 and opening JT files from customers, suppliers, or external project partners.

Exploitation context

Attackers need the target to visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The provided sources do not establish active exploitation or a standalone code-execution path.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports an out-of-bounds read in JT parsing with user interaction required. ZDI identifier ZDI-CAN-15404 is referenced. Do not treat this as known exploited or standalone RCE based on the supplied sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Bentley advisory BE-2021-0005 for vendor-recommended updates or workarounds.
  • Avoid opening JT files from untrusted sources until affected systems are addressed.
  • Apply least-privilege user accounts for MicroStation users where practical.
  • Use mail and web controls to flag unsolicited CAD/JT files or links.
  • Track Bentley, CVE, and ZDI references for any updated remediation details.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory MicroStation CONNECT installations and confirm whether version 10.16.0.80 is present.
  • Review workflows that accept JT files from external or unauthenticated sources.
  • Confirm remediation status against Bentley advisory BE-2021-0005.
  • Check security telemetry for suspicious MicroStation crashes involving JT files.
