CVE-2021-46594: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of B...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of DWG files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15388.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

A flaw in Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 can expose limited sensitive information when a user opens a malicious DWG file or visits a malicious page. It requires user interaction and is rated low by CVSS, but ZDI notes it could support code execution when combined with other vulnerabilities.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted desktop application risk, not an internet-scale emergency. Prioritize teams that exchange engineering files externally and confirm whether affected MicroStation versions remain in use.

Technical view

The issue is CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in DWG parsing caused by insufficient validation of user-supplied data. The CVSS 3.0 vector indicates low confidentiality impact, no integrity or availability impact, and required user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 and allowing users to open DWG files from external or untrusted sources.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show known active exploitation or KEV listing. Exploitation requires convincing a user to open malicious content. Standalone impact is information disclosure, with possible chaining risk noted by ZDI.

Researcher notes

Evidence names MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 and DWG parsing only. The source bundle does not provide patch version details, proof of active exploitation, or broader affected-product data, so avoid expanding scope beyond cited sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Bentley advisory BE-2021-0010 for vendor-supported remediation.
  • Update affected MicroStation installations if Bentley provides a fixed version.
  • Restrict opening DWG files from untrusted senders or locations.
  • Use email and web filtering for suspicious engineering-file delivery.
  • Educate design users to verify unexpected DWG files before opening.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Bentley MicroStation CONNECT versions across endpoints.
  • Identify any installations running version 10.16.0.80.
  • Review workflows that accept external DWG files.
  • Confirm users handling DWG files receive targeted security guidance.
  • Track Bentley and ZDI advisories for remediation details.

Out-of-bounds Read

Out-of-bounds Read represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
