CVE-2021-46587: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley M...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of 3DS files. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15381.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

A malicious 3DS file or page could cause Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 to run attacker-controlled code when a user opens it. This is a workstation compromise risk for CAD users, not evidence of a remotely exploitable internet-facing service flaw.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for CAD workstations that process external 3DS content. The business risk is compromise of engineering endpoints and potentially sensitive design data, but exploitation requires user interaction.

Technical view

CVE-2021-46587 affects Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 3DS file parsing. The flaw is associated with CWE-416 and missing object-existence validation before object operations. Successful exploitation can execute code in the current process after user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to organizations running Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80, especially engineering or design teams that receive 3DS files or links from external parties.

Exploitation context

Sources state exploitation requires the target to visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The CVE is not listed as KEV, and the provided sources do not show active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports a user-assisted code execution issue in the 3DS parser. The bundle identifies ZDI-CAN-15381 and CWE-416, but does not include exploit details, active exploitation evidence, or a specific fixed version.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Bentley advisory BE-2021-0004 for fixed versions and vendor remediation guidance.
  • Update affected MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 installations per Bentley guidance.
  • Restrict opening 3DS files from untrusted or unsolicited sources.
  • Handle external CAD files in isolated, least-privileged workstation workflows.
  • Use endpoint detection and email/web filtering around CAD file delivery.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory MicroStation CONNECT installations and confirm any 10.16.0.80 systems.
  • Check whether Bentley BE-2021-0004 remediation has been applied.
  • Identify teams that open 3DS files from customers, suppliers, or public sources.
  • Review endpoint telemetry for suspicious activity around MicroStation processes.
  • Confirm user awareness controls for unsolicited CAD files and links.
