CVE-2021-46586: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley M...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of 3DS files. Crafted data in a 3DS file can trigger a write past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15380.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

A malicious 3DS model file can make Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 run attacker-controlled code. The victim must open a crafted file or visit a malicious page, so this is mainly a threat to design workstations handling external files.

Executive priority

Treat this as high priority for engineering and design environments that process outside files. It is not described as wormable, but successful exploitation could compromise a workstation and sensitive project data.

Technical view

The flaw is a CWE-787 out-of-bounds write in MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 3DS file parsing. Crafted 3DS data can write past an allocated buffer and enable code execution in the current process context. CVSS is 7.8 high with user interaction required.

Likely exposure

Organizations using Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80, especially teams importing 3DS files from customers, contractors, public sources, or email attachments, are the likely exposure group.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not indicate CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires user interaction through a malicious file or page and would execute with the affected user's application privileges.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports an out-of-bounds write in 3DS parsing with RCE impact. The bundle does not provide exploit details, fixed version text, or active exploitation evidence, so validation should focus on version exposure and file-ingestion workflows.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Bentley BE-2021-0004 and apply any vendor-recommended update or workaround.
  • Block or quarantine untrusted 3DS files until affected systems are remediated.
  • Restrict MicroStation file-opening workflows to trusted project sources.
  • Use endpoint controls to monitor abnormal child processes from MicroStation.
  • Prioritize remediation on workstations handling external design files.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Bentley MicroStation CONNECT installations and identify version 10.16.0.80.
  • Map which users import or open 3DS files from external parties.
  • Review security controls for email, web, and shared-drive delivery of 3DS files.
  • Confirm vendor guidance from Bentley has been reviewed and tracked.
  • Check whether affected workstations have compensating endpoint protections enabled.
