CVE-2021-46568: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley M...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of JT files. Crafted data in a JT file can trigger a write past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-46568 is a high-severity code execution flaw in Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. An attacker must convince a user to open a malicious JT file or visit a malicious page. Successful exploitation could run code with that user's application privileges.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted workstation risk for teams handling engineering files. Prioritize affected design environments and externally sourced JT workflows, but do not assume internet-wide exploitation from the provided evidence.

Technical view

The flaw is a CWE-787 out-of-bounds write in JT file parsing. Crafted JT data can write past an allocated buffer and allow arbitrary code execution in the current process. The source bundle names MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 as affected.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in engineering, CAD, architecture, construction, or infrastructure teams using Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 and receiving JT files from external parties.

Exploitation context

The sources require user interaction and do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Practical risk centers on malicious files or pages delivered through email, portals, shared drives, or partner workflows.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE description and advisories. The core issue is JT parser memory corruption leading to code execution after user interaction. No exploit status, fixed version, or detailed mitigation is provided in the source bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory Bentley MicroStation CONNECT installations and identify version 10.16.0.80.
  • Review Bentley BE-2021-0005 for vendor-approved fixes or mitigations.
  • Limit opening JT files from untrusted or external sources.
  • Apply vendor updates when confirmed by Bentley guidance.
  • Use endpoint controls to flag suspicious MicroStation child processes or crashes.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80 exists in the environment.
  • Identify teams or workflows that open JT files from external sources.
  • Check whether Bentley BE-2021-0005 remediation has been applied.
  • Review EDR and crash telemetry for suspicious MicroStation behavior.
  • Confirm user training covers unexpected CAD/JT file handling.
