CVE-2021-42146: An issue was discovered in Contiki-NG tinyDTLS through master branch 53a0d97.

An issue was discovered in Contiki-NG tinyDTLS through master branch 53a0d97. DTLS servers allow remote attackers to reuse the same epoch number within two times the TCP maximum segment lifetime, which is prohibited in RFC6347. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive application (data of connected clients).

Security readout for executives and security teams

This CVE affects Contiki-NG tinyDTLS server behavior. A remote attacker may be able to make the server accept reused DTLS epoch values and expose sensitive application data from connected clients. The sources do not identify active exploitation or a named fixed release. Exposure is likely limited to systems embedding or deploying Contiki-NG tinyDTLS DTLS server code through master branch 53a0d97. The CVE record lists vendor, product, versions, and CPEs as n/a, so confirmation requires dependency and firmware review. Treat this as high priority where Contiki-NG tinyDTLS protects sensitive client data, especially in embedded or IoT deployments. Prioritize inventory first because public affected-product data is incomplete. Mitigation focus: Identify products, firmware, or services using Contiki-NG tinyDTLS server code.; Check Contiki-NG and product vendor guidance for fixed versions or patches.; Restrict affected DTLS services to trusted networks where operationally possible..
