CVE-2021-35659: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw can let an unauthenticated remote user crash or hang software that uses Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 to process network-supplied content. The reported impact is denial of service, not data theft or code execution. Business urgency depends on which exposed applications embed this SDK and whether they process untrusted HTTP input.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority availability risk for exposed document-processing systems. It is less severe than a data breach flaw, but repeated crashes in critical workflows can disrupt operations and customer-facing services. Prioritize systems that process untrusted content over HTTP.

Technical view

CVE-2021-35659 affects Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5, specifically Outside In Filters. Oracle describes it as easily exploitable over HTTP without authentication when an embedding application passes network data directly into Outside In. CVSS 3.1 is 7.5, driven by high availability impact only.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in applications, middleware, or products embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 for file or document filtering. Risk is higher when internet-facing or internal HTTP services pass untrusted uploaded or fetched content directly to the SDK.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or evidence of active exploitation. Oracle states exploitation can be unauthenticated and network-accessible via HTTP in affected integration patterns, causing hangs or repeatable crashes. The protocol and severity may be lower if input is not network-sourced.

Researcher notes

The CVE is SDK-context dependent. Validate the embedding product, input path, and trust boundary before assigning full network CVSS. Public sources identify denial of service only, with no confidentiality or integrity impact and no confirmed active exploitation in the supplied bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all products or services embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5.
  • Review Oracle October 2021 CPU and embedding-vendor guidance for applicable updates.
  • Reduce network exposure to services processing untrusted content through Outside In.
  • Add operational monitoring for repeated crashes or hangs in document-processing paths.
  • Prioritize vendor-supported remediation for business-critical or internet-facing deployments.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is present in the environment.
  • Trace whether HTTP-sourced data is passed directly into Outside In Filters.
  • Inventory exposed upload, preview, indexing, or conversion workflows using the SDK.
  • Review availability logs for repeated crashes or hangs around content processing.
  • Check Oracle and product-vendor advisories for confirmed affected builds.
