CVE-2021-35658: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This issue can let an unauthenticated remote attacker make Oracle Outside In Technology stop responding or crash repeatedly. The business impact is service availability, not data theft or data modification, based on the provided CVSS vector and description.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority availability risk for systems that rely on Oracle Outside In to process external content. Prioritize internet-facing or business-critical workflows first because the issue requires no authentication and can cause repeatable outages.

Technical view

CVE-2021-35658 affects Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5, component Outside In Filters. It is described as easily exploitable over HTTP with no privileges or user interaction, causing a complete denial of service when integrated software passes network-supplied data into Outside In.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is embedded in applications that process files or content received over HTTP or other network paths. Actual CVSS may be lower when input is not network-reachable.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited evidence of active exploitation. The risk comes from unauthenticated, low-complexity remote denial of service against vulnerable deployments, with availability as the only stated impact.

Researcher notes

No CWE is provided in the bundle. The CVSS score assumes network-delivered data reaches Outside In directly; integrated products may alter exposure. The bundle does not provide exploit details, proof of active exploitation, or a standalone workaround beyond Oracle guidance.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify deployments using Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 or Outside In Filters.
  • Review Oracle October 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for this CVE.
  • Update affected Oracle Outside In components according to vendor guidance.
  • Restrict network paths that feed untrusted content into Outside In processing.
  • Monitor dependent applications for repeated crashes or processing hangs.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory applications that embed Oracle Outside In SDKs or filters.
  • Confirm whether version 8.5.5 is present in those applications.
  • Trace whether HTTP-received data is passed directly into Outside In.
  • Review service logs for recurring crashes, hangs, or restart loops.
  • Verify vendor patch status through Oracle CPU documentation.
