CVE-2021-35604: Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: InnoDB).

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: InnoDB). Supported versions that are affected are 5.7.35 and prior and 8.0.26 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Server accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.5 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-35604 is a MySQL Server InnoDB vulnerability. A highly privileged network attacker could disrupt the database or alter some accessible data. The business risk is strongest where older MySQL servers support critical applications and privileged database access is broadly reachable.

Executive priority

Treat as a planned remediation item unless affected MySQL servers support critical services or expose privileged access broadly. Prioritize patching critical databases and reducing privileged network reachability.

Technical view

Oracle lists affected MySQL Server versions as 5.7.35 and prior, and 8.0.26 and prior. CVSS 3.1 is 5.5: network attack vector, low complexity, high privileges required, no user interaction, integrity low, availability high, confidentiality none.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to organizations running affected Oracle MySQL Server versions or downstream vendor packages referenced by Oracle, NetApp, or Fedora advisories. Systems with tightly restricted privileged database access have lower practical exposure.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not cite active exploitation, and KEV status is false. The attacker must already hold high privileges and have network access through supported MySQL protocols. Impact is denial of service and limited unauthorized data modification.

Researcher notes

Public details in the bundle are sparse: no CWE, no flaw mechanics, and no exploit proof. Analysis should stay anchored to Oracle's InnoDB component attribution, affected versions, and CVSS vector.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory MySQL Server versions across production and non-production environments.
  • Review Oracle October 2021 CPU guidance for applicable MySQL updates.
  • Apply Oracle or downstream vendor security updates where applicable.
  • Restrict network paths to MySQL from non-administrative systems.
  • Review and reduce high-privilege MySQL accounts.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm no MySQL instance is version 5.7.35 or earlier.
  • Confirm no MySQL instance is version 8.0.26 or earlier.
  • Check Fedora, NetApp, or other vendor package status where used.
  • Review MySQL logs for repeated crashes or hangs.
  • Audit privileged account access paths to database services.
