CVE-2021-35595: Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Business In...

Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Business Interlink). Supported versions that are affected are 8.57, 8.58 and 8.59. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.1 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-35595 affects Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools Business Interlink in versions 8.57, 8.58, and 8.59. An unauthenticated attacker with HTTP network access could affect confidentiality and integrity, but exploitation requires another person to interact. Treat it as important for PeopleSoft environments, not a confirmed emergency from the provided sources.

Executive priority

Prioritize this for any active PeopleSoft estate because unauthenticated HTTP access and data integrity impact create business risk. It is moderate urgency unless systems are internet-facing, highly sensitive, or unpatched since Oracle's October 2021 advisory.

Technical view

The CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N with score 6.1. Oracle states successful attacks can read a subset of accessible data and update, insert, or delete some accessible data. Scope is changed, indicating possible impact beyond the vulnerable PeopleTools component.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.57, 8.58, or 8.59, especially where PeopleSoft HTTP interfaces are reachable by untrusted networks or broad user populations.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Oracle describes the issue as easily exploitable over HTTP by an unauthenticated attacker, but requiring human interaction from someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and Oracle advisory reference. Do not assume public exploit availability, active exploitation, or specific endpoints from these sources. Validation should focus on affected version presence, HTTP reachability, Business Interlink relevance, and vendor remediation status.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.57, 8.58, and 8.59 deployments.
  • Review Oracle's October 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for CVE-2021-35595.
  • Apply vendor-provided remediation for affected PeopleTools systems where applicable.
  • Restrict HTTP access to PeopleSoft interfaces to trusted users and networks.
  • Prioritize systems handling sensitive HR, finance, or identity-related PeopleSoft data.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm the deployed PeopleTools version on each PeopleSoft environment.
  • Check whether Business Interlink is present or enabled in affected deployments.
  • Verify Oracle October 2021 CPU remediation status in patch records.
  • Review PeopleSoft HTTP exposure from internet and internal untrusted networks.
  • Look for suspicious unauthenticated HTTP activity in PeopleSoft-facing logs.
