CVE-2021-35573: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-35573 is a denial-of-service flaw in Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5. If an application exposes Outside In processing to unauthenticated HTTP input, an attacker may cause hangs or repeatable crashes, disrupting availability. The evidence points to service outage risk, not data theft or code execution.

Executive priority

Prioritize this as high where Outside In 8.5.5 supports public or unauthenticated file-processing workflows. Business risk is availability disruption. If the SDK is absent, patched, or used only in offline workflows, urgency is lower after validation.

Technical view

The vulnerable component is Oracle Outside In Filters in Outside In Technology 8.5.5. Oracle rates it CVSS 7.5 with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, and high availability impact. Oracle notes actual protocol and score depend on how embedding software passes data to the SDK.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in applications or products embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 and passing network-received HTTP content directly into the SDK, such as document viewing, filtering, or conversion workflows.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. The CVE is described as easily exploitable by an unauthenticated network attacker via HTTP, but only in relevant embedding scenarios.

Researcher notes

The CVSS score assumes software passes network data directly to Outside In Technology. Oracle states impact and protocol can vary by embedding application. Sources identify availability impact only, with no confidentiality or integrity impact and no CWE listed in the bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle October 2021 CPU guidance for Outside In Technology fixes.
  • Inventory applications and vendor products using Outside In Technology 8.5.5.
  • Prioritize remediation for internet-facing or unauthenticated document-processing paths.
  • Reduce unauthenticated access to affected processing endpoints where feasible.
  • Monitor affected services for repeated crashes, hangs, or availability degradation.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is present in your environment.
  • Map which applications pass HTTP-received data into Outside In Filters.
  • Verify current patch status against Oracle October 2021 CPU guidance.
  • Check service logs for recurring hangs or crashes in document-processing paths.
  • Record whether exposure is internet-facing, internal-only, or offline processing.
