CVE-2021-35572: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-35572 is a denial-of-service issue in Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5. If an application exposes Outside In parsing to HTTP-supplied content, an unauthenticated attacker could make the component hang or repeatedly crash, disrupting services that depend on document or content conversion.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority availability risk for exposed document-processing services, especially customer-facing portals or workflows. It is not described as data theft or code execution, but repeated crashes can still interrupt business operations and customer access.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable vulnerability in Outside In Filters within Outside In Technology 8.5.5. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.5, network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction, with high availability impact and no stated confidentiality or integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where products or internal applications embed Outside In Technology 8.5.5 and pass HTTP-received data directly into the SDK. Risk may be lower when inputs are local, authenticated, pre-filtered, or not network reachable.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or other evidence of active exploitation. The issue is described as easily exploitable and unauthenticated over HTTP in applicable deployments, but the impact is limited to availability in the cited CVSS vector.

Researcher notes

Key uncertainty is deployment context. Oracle notes the protocol and CVSS score depend on software using the SDK. Validation should focus on whether network-originated data is passed directly into Outside In Technology and whether affected version 8.5.5 remains present.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory applications embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5.
  • Review Oracle CPU October 2021 and current Oracle guidance for applicable updates.
  • Prioritize systems processing untrusted HTTP-submitted documents or content.
  • Reduce direct network exposure to parsing workflows where feasible.
  • Monitor dependent services for hangs, repeated crashes, and restart loops.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is present in deployed software.
  • Map every path where HTTP input reaches Outside In Filters.
  • Check vendor patch or component version against Oracle guidance.
  • Verify service monitoring detects parser hangs and repeated crashes.
  • Document compensating controls for systems that cannot be updated immediately.
