CVE-2021-35549: Vulnerability in the Oracle Solaris product of Oracle Systems (component: Utility).

Vulnerability in the Oracle Solaris product of Oracle Systems (component: Utility). The supported version that is affected is 11. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle Solaris executes to compromise Oracle Solaris. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Solaris accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle Solaris. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.9 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a low-severity Oracle Solaris 11 issue in a utility component. An attacker must already have low-privileged local access and must get another user to interact with something. Successful exploitation could alter some Solaris-accessible data or cause a partial service disruption, but the source reports no confidentiality impact.

Executive priority

Treat this as routine patch governance, not emergency response, unless Solaris 11 hosts are shared by untrusted users or support critical operations. Prioritize during the next controlled Solaris maintenance window.

Technical view

CVE-2021-35549 affects Oracle Solaris 11, component Utility. CVSS 3.1 score is 3.9 with local attack vector, low complexity, low privileges, required user interaction, unchanged scope, no confidentiality impact, and low integrity and availability impacts.

Likely exposure

Exposure is mainly Solaris 11 systems that allow local logons for non-administrators, contractors, shared users, or semi-trusted workloads. Systems without broad interactive access are less exposed based on the local, low-privilege, user-interaction requirements.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires local authenticated access and human interaction by someone other than the attacker, which limits remote drive-by risk but still matters on shared Solaris environments.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and Oracle advisory reference. No CWE is supplied. Focus validation on Solaris 11 presence, local account exposure, user-interaction paths, and whether Oracle’s October 2021 CPU remediation was applied.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle October 2021 CPU guidance for Solaris 11 remediation.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle-recommended Solaris 11 updates where applicable.
  • Restrict local logon access to trusted users only.
  • Reduce shared accounts and unnecessary interactive shell access.
  • Train operators not to interact with untrusted local content or requests.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory hosts running Oracle Solaris 11.
  • Check whether Oracle October 2021 CPU fixes are applied.
  • Identify systems with low-privileged local user access.
  • Review whether affected hosts support shared or semi-trusted shell access.
  • Confirm monitoring covers unauthorized data changes and partial service disruption.
