CVE-2021-34772: Cisco Orbital Open Redirect Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Orbital could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to redirect users to a malicious webpage. This vulnerability is due to improper validation of URL paths in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user to click a crafted URL. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to redirect a user to a malicious website. This vulnerability, known as an open redirect attack, is used in phishing attacks to persuade users to visit malicious sites.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Cisco disclosed an open redirect in Cisco Orbital that could help phishing campaigns. An attacker would need a user to click a crafted link, after which the user could be sent to a malicious website. This is not described as direct system compromise, but it can increase credential-theft and social-engineering risk.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate phishing-enablement issue. Prioritize if Cisco Orbital is deployed or if users commonly access its management interface. It should not outrank remotely exploitable takeover bugs, but it belongs in routine patch and phishing-risk reduction work.

Technical view

The issue is CWE-601 in Cisco Orbital's web-based management interface. Improper URL path validation allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to redirect users after user interaction. CVSS 3.1 is 4.7, with network access, low complexity, no privileges, required user interaction, changed scope, low integrity impact, and no confidentiality or availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations using Cisco Orbital. The source bundle does not identify affected version ranges or CPEs, so teams must verify their deployed release and Cisco advisory applicability.

Exploitation context

CISA KEV status is false in the source bundle, and no provided source states active exploitation. The described realistic abuse case is phishing: using a trusted-looking Cisco Orbital URL to redirect a user to a malicious site.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE description and Cisco advisory reference. No affected versions, fixed versions, or exploit-in-the-wild details are present in the bundle. Avoid assuming broader Cisco product exposure beyond Cisco Orbital.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-amp-redirect-rQ2Bu7dU for affected releases and vendor guidance.
  • Inventory Cisco Orbital deployments and confirm whether the management interface is present.
  • Apply Cisco-recommended updates or mitigations where the advisory says the deployment is affected.
  • Reduce phishing risk with user reporting, link inspection, and domain allowlisting where appropriate.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Cisco Orbital is deployed in the environment.
  • Compare deployed release details against the Cisco advisory.
  • Review security controls for detections of suspicious redirects involving Cisco Orbital URLs.
  • Check awareness and response workflows for phishing reports involving trusted infrastructure links.
