CVE-2021-34305: A vulnerability has been identified in JT2Go (All versions < V13.2), Teamcenter Visualization (All versions...

A vulnerability has been identified in JT2Go (All versions < V13.2), Teamcenter Visualization (All versions < V13.2). The Gif_loader.dll library in affected applications lacks proper validation of user-supplied data when parsing GIF files. This could result in an out of bounds write past the end of an allocated structure. An attacker could leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Siemens JT2Go and Teamcenter Visualization before V13.2 can mishandle GIF files. A malicious file could corrupt memory and allow code execution with the privileges of the user running the application. This matters most where staff open engineering or visualization content from suppliers, customers, or other external sources.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for engineering and design environments using affected Siemens visualization tools. The business risk is workstation compromise through malicious file handling, with urgency driven by external file exchange and user privileges.

Technical view

Gif_loader.dll in affected Siemens applications lacks proper validation of user-supplied GIF data, causing an out-of-bounds write past an allocated structure. The CVE maps to CWE-787 and states code execution is possible in the current process context. Affected products are JT2Go and Teamcenter Visualization before V13.2.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to endpoints or workstations with Siemens JT2Go or Teamcenter Visualization below V13.2, especially where users open GIF files or visualization content from untrusted or semi-trusted sources.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires a crafted GIF to be parsed by the affected application. Impact is user-context code execution, not stated remote unauthenticated server compromise.

Researcher notes

Evidence is clear on product, version boundary, vulnerable DLL, vulnerability class, and stated code-execution impact. The bundle does not provide CVSS, exploit maturity, observed exploitation, or detailed patch notes beyond the V13.2 affected-version cutoff.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade JT2Go and Teamcenter Visualization to V13.2 or later.
  • Review Siemens SSA-483182 for vendor-specific remediation guidance.
  • Restrict opening GIF files from untrusted sources in affected applications.
  • Prioritize engineering workstations that process external partner or supplier files.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Siemens JT2Go and Teamcenter Visualization installations and versions.
  • Flag any installation below V13.2 as affected.
  • Confirm whether affected users open external GIF or visualization content.
  • Verify remediation by confirming installed version is V13.2 or later.

Out-of-bounds Write

Out-of-bounds Write represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
