CVE-2021-33036: Apache Hadoop Privilege escalation vulnerability

In Apache Hadoop 2.2.0 to 2.10.1, 3.0.0-alpha1 to 3.1.4, 3.2.0 to 3.2.2, and 3.3.0 to 3.3.1, a user who can escalate to yarn user can possibly run arbitrary commands as root user. Users should upgrade to Apache Hadoop 2.10.2, 3.2.3, 3.3.2 or higher.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This vulnerability affects Apache Hadoop versions listed by Apache. A user who can become the Hadoop yarn user may be able to run arbitrary commands as root. That can turn limited cluster access into full host compromise. The source bundle does not provide CVSS scoring or evidence of active exploitation. Organizations running affected Apache Hadoop clusters are exposed, especially where users, automation, or service accounts can become the yarn user. Exposure is less likely where Hadoop is not present or all clusters run fixed versions. Treat as a high-priority remediation item for Hadoop environments because successful abuse can lead to root-level command execution. Urgency depends on whether users can become yarn and whether affected versions remain in production. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Apache Hadoop to 2.10.2, 3.2.3, 3.3.2, or later.; Prioritize clusters where users or services can become the yarn user.; Restrict administrative paths that allow escalation to the yarn user until upgraded..
