In Progress MOVEit Transfer before 2021.0 (13.0), a SQL injection vulnerability has been found in the MOVEit Transfer web app that could allow an authenticated attacker to gain unauthorized access to MOVEit Transfer's database. Depending on the database engine being used (MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or Azure SQL), an attacker may be able to infer information about the structure and contents of the database in addition to executing SQL statements that alter or destroy database elements. This is in MOVEit.DMZ.WebApp in SILHuman.vb.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-31827 is an authenticated SQL injection in Progress MOVEit Transfer before 2021.0 (13.0). A valid user could potentially access database data they should not see and, depending on the database engine, alter or destroy database elements.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority remediation for any pre-2021.0 MOVEit Transfer deployment. The authentication requirement lowers opportunistic risk, but the potential database impact is serious for a managed file-transfer platform.

Technical view

The CVE record identifies SQL injection in the MOVEit Transfer web app component MOVEit.DMZ.WebApp, specifically SILHuman.vb. It affects versions before 2021.0 (13.0). Impact varies across MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Azure SQL, including database inference and possible SQL statement execution against database elements.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running MOVEit Transfer before 2021.0 (13.0). The attacker must be authenticated, but internet-facing or broadly accessible MOVEit portals increase business risk because the target handles sensitive file-transfer data.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. The CVE description supports authenticated database compromise risk, but does not provide public exploit status, prevalence, or confirmed incident evidence for this specific CVE.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and vendor references. No CVSS, CWE, or KEV evidence is provided in the bundle. Do not assume unauthenticated exploitability or active exploitation. Focus assessment on version, authentication scope, database engine, and web app exposure.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all MOVEit Transfer versions and prioritize systems before 2021.0 (13.0).
  • Review the Progress April 2021 advisory for vendor-approved remediation guidance.
  • Upgrade MOVEit Transfer to 2021.0 (13.0) or later where applicable.
  • Restrict MOVEit web app access to required authenticated users only.
  • Review database backups and recovery procedures for affected deployments.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm the deployed MOVEit Transfer version on every instance.
  • Verify whether the MOVEit web app is externally reachable.
  • Review authenticated access logs for unusual database-related errors or unexpected user activity.
  • Check database integrity and recent administrative changes on affected systems.
  • Confirm remediation status against Progress release notes or advisory guidance.
