IBM Maximo Asset Management 7.6.1.1 and 7.6.1.2 is vulnerable to HTTP header injection, caused by improper validation of input by the HOST headers. By sending a specially crafted HTTP request, a remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to inject HTTP HOST header, which will allow the attacker to conduct various attacks against the vulnerable system, including cross-site scripting, cache poisoning or session hijacking. IBM X-Force ID: 205680.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-29854 affects IBM Maximo Asset Management 7.6.1.1 and 7.6.1.2. Improper Host header validation can let a remote attacker influence HTTP headers, potentially enabling cross-site scripting, cache poisoning, or session hijacking against vulnerable systems.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate-priority remediation item. It is not listed as known exploited, but affected Maximo systems may support important asset-management workflows, and successful abuse could affect trust in web sessions or cached content.

Technical view

The issue is HTTP Host header injection in IBM Maximo Asset Management. The CVSS 3.0 score is 5.4, with network access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, and low confidentiality and integrity impact. The source bundle does not provide exploit details or exact remediation steps.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to IBM Maximo Asset Management 7.6.1.1 and 7.6.1.2 based on the provided sources. Internet-facing, partner-facing, or shared-cache deployments would carry higher practical risk. No other affected products or versions are identified in the bundle.

Exploitation context

The source bundle states a specially crafted HTTP request could exploit the issue, but it does not provide public exploit evidence. CISA KEV status is false, and no cited source in the bundle supports active exploitation.

Researcher notes

The evidence supports Host header injection with possible XSS, cache poisoning, or session hijacking outcomes. Privileges are required per the CVSS vector. The bundle does not include CWE, proof-of-concept status, exploit maturity beyond E:U, or precise fixed versions.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify any Maximo Asset Management 7.6.1.1 or 7.6.1.2 deployments.
  • Review IBM advisory guidance before choosing a fix or workaround.
  • Apply IBM-recommended remediation for affected Maximo versions.
  • Restrict untrusted network access to Maximo until remediated.
  • Review proxy and cache handling around Host headers.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm Maximo product version on all production and non-production instances.
  • Check whether affected instances are reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Verify IBM remediation status against the official advisory.
  • Review logs for abnormal Host header values or cache anomalies.
  • Confirm vulnerability scanners map findings to CVE-2021-29854.
