CVE-2021-29631: In FreeBSD 13.0-STABLE before n246941-20f96f215562, 12.2-STABLE before r370400, 11.4-STABLE before r370399,...

In FreeBSD 13.0-STABLE before n246941-20f96f215562, 12.2-STABLE before r370400, 11.4-STABLE before r370399, 13.0-RELEASE before p4, 12.2-RELEASE before p10, and 11.4-RELEASE before p13, certain VirtIO-based device models in bhyve failed to handle errors when fetching I/O descriptors. A malicious guest may cause the device model to operate on uninitialized I/O vectors leading to memory corruption, crashing of the bhyve process, and possibly arbitrary code execution in the bhyve process.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This FreeBSD bhyve flaw lets a malicious virtual machine crash the hypervisor process and may allow code execution inside that bhyve process. Business risk is highest where FreeBSD hosts run untrusted or tenant-controlled guests with VirtIO devices.

Executive priority

Prioritize patching bhyve hosts that run shared, customer, lab, or otherwise untrusted guests. The main business concern is guest-to-host process impact, including service outage and possible execution within the hypervisor process.

Technical view

Certain VirtIO-based bhyve device models mishandled errors while fetching I/O descriptors. The device model could then use uninitialized I/O vectors, causing memory corruption, bhyve process crashes, and possible arbitrary code execution in that process.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to FreeBSD bhyve environments on listed unpatched FreeBSD 13.0, 12.2, and 11.4 release or stable builds. Systems not running bhyve, not using affected VirtIO device models, or already patched are less likely exposed.

Exploitation context

The source states a malicious guest may trigger the condition. The bundle does not include KEV listing, public exploitation evidence, exploit maturity, or confirmed attacks in the wild.

Researcher notes

The bundle provides impact and affected FreeBSD versions but no CVSS, CWE, detailed exploit prerequisites, or workaround text. Treat this as a virtualization boundary issue requiring version validation against FreeBSD advisory data.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade FreeBSD beyond 13.0-RELEASE p4, 12.2-RELEASE p10, or 11.4-RELEASE p13.
  • Review FreeBSD-SA-21:13.bhyve for exact branch-specific remediation guidance.
  • Check NetApp advisory NTAP-20210923-0004 if NetApp-managed FreeBSD-derived systems are in scope.
  • Restrict bhyve guest administration to trusted users until remediation is complete.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory FreeBSD hosts running bhyve virtualization.
  • Record FreeBSD release, patch level, and stable branch revision for each host.
  • Identify guests using VirtIO-based devices on affected bhyve hosts.
  • Confirm remediated hosts meet or exceed the fixed FreeBSD versions listed.
  • Document systems where vendor-specific guidance is still pending review.
