CVE-2021-26697: Apache Airflow: Lineage API endpoint for Experimental API missed authentication check

The lineage endpoint of the deprecated Experimental API was not protected by authentication in Airflow 2.0.0. This allowed unauthenticated users to hit that endpoint. This is low-severity issue as the attacker needs to be aware of certain parameters to pass to that endpoint and even after can just get some metadata about a DAG and a Task. This issue affects Apache Airflow 2.0.0.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Apache Airflow 2.0.0 exposed one deprecated Experimental API lineage endpoint without authentication. An unauthenticated person could query limited workflow metadata if they knew the right parameters. The cited advisory describes this as low severity because the impact is metadata disclosure, not execution or account takeover. Exposure is limited to organizations running Apache Airflow 2.0.0 with the web/API interface reachable by untrusted users or networks. Internet-exposed Airflow instances are more relevant than internally isolated deployments. Later versions are not identified as affected in the provided sources. Handle as a low-priority hygiene fix unless Airflow 2.0.0 is internet-facing or contains sensitive workflow metadata. The main business risk is unauthorized visibility into workflow structure, which could support later reconnaissance. Mitigation focus: Identify and prioritize any Apache Airflow 2.0.0 deployments.; Check Apache Airflow advisory and release notes; this source bundle does not name a fixed version.; Upgrade from Apache Airflow 2.0.0 after confirming the vendor-corrected release..

Improper Privilege Management

Improper Privilege Management represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
