CVE-2021-2471: Vulnerability in the MySQL Connectors product of Oracle MySQL (component: Connector/J).

Vulnerability in the MySQL Connectors product of Oracle MySQL (component: Connector/J). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.26 and prior. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Connectors. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all MySQL Connectors accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Connectors. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.9 (Confidentiality and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2471 affects Oracle MySQL Connector/J in MySQL Connectors 8.0.26 and prior. It is difficult to exploit and requires a highly privileged network attacker, but a successful attack could expose critical connector-accessible data and cause repeated crashes or hangs.

Executive priority

Treat as a scheduled remediation item, not an emergency, unless sensitive data systems still run affected Connector/J versions. The business risk is data exposure and application availability loss if a privileged attacker can reach the environment.

Technical view

Oracle describes a Connector/J vulnerability with CVSS 3.1 score 5.9: AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H. The stated impacts are confidentiality and availability, with no integrity impact. No CWE is provided in the source bundle.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in Java applications using MySQL Connector/J 8.0.26 or earlier, especially where the connector accesses sensitive databases. Systems using newer, vendor-supported Connector/J versions may not be affected, but the bundle does not name a fixed version.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not cite active exploitation, and CISA KEV status is false. Exploitation requires high privileges, network access, no user interaction, and high attack complexity, which reduces broad opportunistic risk.

Researcher notes

The public bundle is sparse: it names Oracle MySQL Connector/J, affected versions, privileges, attack complexity, and impact classes, but not root cause, CWE, exploit details, or a specific fixed version. Avoid extrapolating beyond Oracle guidance.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory Java applications using MySQL Connector/J.
  • Identify any Connector/J versions 8.0.26 or prior.
  • Review Oracle Critical Patch Update guidance for this CVE.
  • Apply Oracle-supported Connector/J updates per vendor guidance.
  • Prioritize systems handling sensitive or regulated data.

Validation and detection

  • Check dependency manifests and runtime artifacts for Connector/J versions.
  • Confirm affected applications no longer use 8.0.26 or prior.
  • Verify deployment artifacts match approved dependency versions.
  • Review monitoring for connector hangs or repeated crashes.
