CVE-2021-2453: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2453 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5. An unauthenticated network attacker could cause the affected component to hang or crash when exposed through software that feeds HTTP-received data into Outside In. The documented business risk is service disruption, not data theft or system takeover.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority availability issue for services that process external documents or content. It is less urgent for isolated internal use, but internet-facing or customer-facing workflows should be patched or otherwise constrained promptly because unauthenticated disruption is the documented impact.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable flaw in Outside In Filters affecting Outside In Technology 8.5.5. CVSS 3.1 is 7.5 with network, low-complexity, no-privilege, no-user-interaction characteristics and high availability impact only. Oracle notes the protocol and score depend on the embedding application and whether network data is passed directly to the SDK.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is embedded in an application or service that processes attacker-supplied content received over HTTP. Systems using the SDK only on local or otherwise trusted data may have lower practical exposure than the published CVSS scenario.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. The vulnerability is described as unauthenticated and easily exploitable when reachable through an integrating application, with successful attacks causing a complete denial of service through hangs or repeatable crashes.

Researcher notes

Do not assume every Outside In deployment has the same CVSS exposure. Oracle explicitly ties protocol and score to the integrating software. Validation should focus on SDK version, content ingress path, trust boundary, and whether untrusted network data reaches Outside In Filters without compensating controls.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle July 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for Outside In Technology.
  • Ask vendors of embedded products whether they include Outside In 8.5.5.
  • Reduce unauthenticated access to file filtering or content conversion paths.
  • Add isolation, timeouts, and restart controls around document processing services.
  • Prioritize remediation for internet-facing or business-critical processing services.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory applications and services that embed Oracle Outside In Technology.
  • Confirm whether any deployed component uses affected version 8.5.5.
  • Map which services pass HTTP-received data into Outside In Filters.
  • Check vendor advisories for dependent products using the SDK.
  • Review monitoring for repeated hangs or crashes in document processing paths.
