CVE-2021-2452: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2452 can let an unauthenticated remote attacker crash or hang software that uses Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5. The business impact is service disruption, not data theft. Urgency depends on whether your applications expose Outside In filtering to untrusted network-supplied content.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority availability risk for internet-facing or partner-facing content processing services. It is less urgent where Outside In is absent, patched, or only processes trusted local input.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable availability flaw in Outside In Technology, component Outside In Filters, affecting version 8.5.5. CVSS is 7.5 with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, and high availability impact. The score assumes network data is passed directly into Outside In.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in applications or services embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 and processing untrusted content received over HTTP or another network path.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited active exploitation. Oracle states the issue is unauthenticated and easily exploitable over HTTP when deployment conditions match, with successful attacks causing complete denial of service.

Researcher notes

Do not assume all Oracle Fusion Middleware deployments are exposed. The CVSS depends on how an embedding application passes data into the SDK. The provided sources name Outside In Technology 8.5.5 only and describe denial of service impact only.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle July 2021 CPU guidance for Outside In Technology updates.
  • Identify applications embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5.
  • Prioritize systems processing untrusted network-supplied documents or content.
  • Restrict untrusted HTTP access to affected filtering paths where feasible.
  • Monitor affected services for repeated crashes or hangs.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is present in your software stack.
  • Map where untrusted network content reaches Outside In Filters.
  • Check whether vendor or Oracle CPU guidance has been applied.
  • Review service telemetry for unexplained hangs or repeatable crashes.
  • Document compensating controls for systems awaiting vendor updates.
