CVE-2021-2436: Vulnerability in the Oracle Common Applications product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: CRM User Man...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Common Applications product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: CRM User Management Framework). Supported versions that are affected are 12.1.1-12.1.3 and 12.2.3-12.2.10. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Common Applications. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle Common Applications, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle Common Applications accessible data as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Common Applications accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.2 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This Oracle E-Business Suite issue can let an unauthenticated attacker reach sensitive Oracle Common Applications data over HTTP if they can induce required user interaction. The main business risk is exposure of critical CRM-related application data and limited unauthorized data changes, not service outage.

Executive priority

Treat this as high priority for affected EBS deployments because it can expose critical business data without attacker credentials. Prioritize patch verification on internet-accessible, partner-accessible, or high-value CRM environments.

Technical view

CVE-2021-2436 affects Oracle E-Business Suite Common Applications, specifically CRM User Management Framework, versions 12.1.1-12.1.3 and 12.2.3-12.2.10. It is network-accessible over HTTP, requires no attacker privileges, needs user interaction, changes scope, and has CVSS 8.2 with high confidentiality and low integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Organizations running Oracle E-Business Suite with affected Common Applications versions are the relevant exposure group, especially where EBS HTTP endpoints are reachable by users or untrusted networks. The bundle does not identify cloud-only, appliance, or non-EBS products as affected.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Exploitation is described as easy from a CVSS perspective, but successful attack requires interaction from a person other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

The public bundle does not provide root-cause details, exploit primitives, indicators of compromise, or confirmed exploitation. Analysis should stay version-based and vendor-guidance-based unless additional Oracle advisory material is available internally.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify Oracle E-Business Suite instances running affected versions.
  • Review Oracle's July 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for this CVE.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle-supported patch or upgrade path.
  • Restrict unnecessary HTTP access to affected EBS interfaces.
  • Prioritize externally reachable or high-data-value EBS environments.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory EBS versions against 12.1.1-12.1.3 and 12.2.3-12.2.10.
  • Confirm whether Common Applications and CRM User Management Framework are deployed.
  • Verify Oracle July 2021 CPU remediation status or later equivalent fixes.
  • Review access paths to EBS HTTP endpoints.
  • Check logs for unusual user-management or data-access activity.
