CVE-2021-2419: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a denial-of-service vulnerability in Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5. If an exposed application sends network-received data into Outside In filters, an unauthenticated attacker could cause hangs or repeatable crashes. The direct business risk is service disruption, not data theft or data alteration based on the supplied sources.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for internet-facing or business-critical services that process user-supplied files or content through Outside In. The known impact is availability loss, so urgency should track service criticality and exposure to unauthenticated network input.

Technical view

CVE-2021-2419 affects Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5, component Outside In Filters. CVSS 3.1 is 7.5: AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H. Oracle notes Outside In is an SDK suite, so real exposure depends on how consuming software receives and passes data to it.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where applications embed Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 and process untrusted content received over HTTP or other network paths. If data is only local or strongly gated before reaching Outside In, the practical score may be lower per Oracle’s note.

Exploitation context

The source says the vulnerability is easily exploitable by an unauthenticated network attacker via HTTP. However, the bundle provides no KEV listing and no cited evidence of active exploitation. Treat exploit status as unconfirmed while prioritizing availability-sensitive services.

Researcher notes

The record does not provide a CWE, root-cause detail, exploit artifacts, or downstream affected application list. The CVSS score assumes network data is passed directly to Outside In; researchers should validate the embedding application’s data flow before assigning environment-specific risk.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle’s July 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for Outside In Technology.
  • Apply applicable Oracle updates or vendor-supplied fixes for products embedding Outside In.
  • Inventory applications that use Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5.
  • Limit unauthenticated network paths that pass content into Outside In filters.
  • Add monitoring for repeated crashes, hangs, and availability degradation.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5 is present in your environment.
  • Map which applications pass HTTP-received data into Outside In filters.
  • Verify patched or updated component versions against Oracle or application vendor guidance.
  • Review service logs for repeated crashes, hangs, or abnormal restart patterns.
  • Check whether compensating controls restrict untrusted file or content processing.
