Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This vulnerability affects Oracle PeopleSoft HCM Candidate Gateway 9.2. An attacker who can reach the service over HTTP may alter or read some Candidate Gateway data without logging in. The business concern is data integrity and limited confidentiality exposure in recruiting workflows, not system takeover or outage based on the supplied CVSS impacts.

Executive priority

Treat this as a near-term remediation item for any exposed PeopleSoft recruiting portal. It is not marked as known exploited in the supplied data, but unauthenticated HTTP reachability and data modification capability create meaningful business risk.

Technical view

CVE-2021-2404 is in the PeopleSoft Enterprise HCM Candidate Gateway e-mail notification component. The CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N. The source states unauthenticated HTTP access can compromise Candidate Gateway, allowing limited read access and unauthorized update, insert, or delete access to some accessible data.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise HCM Candidate Gateway 9.2 is deployed and reachable over HTTP, especially from untrusted networks. The source bundle does not identify other affected versions or products.

Exploitation context

The CVE states exploitation is easy, unauthenticated, network-accessible via HTTP, and requires no user interaction. The source bundle marks KEV as false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

The public bundle provides product, version, component, impact, CVSS, and Oracle advisory reference, but no CWE, root-cause detail, proof of concept, or named workaround. Do not assume broader PeopleSoft exposure beyond Candidate Gateway 9.2 from these sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle's July 2021 Critical Patch Update for the exact PeopleSoft HCM Candidate Gateway fix.
  • Apply the vendor-provided PeopleSoft update or mitigation identified by Oracle guidance.
  • Limit HTTP access to Candidate Gateway from untrusted networks where business processes allow.
  • Monitor Candidate Gateway data for unexpected reads, inserts, updates, or deletions.
  • Prioritize remediation for internet-facing recruiting portals.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether PeopleSoft Enterprise HCM Candidate Gateway 9.2 is present.
  • Identify whether the Candidate Gateway e-mail notification component is enabled or exposed.
  • Check Oracle patch records against the July 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance.
  • Review HTTP access logs for unauthenticated requests to Candidate Gateway paths.
  • Check recruiting data for unexplained modifications around suspected exposure windows.
