CVE-2021-2341: Vulnerability in the Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Java SE (component: Netwo...

Vulnerability in the Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Java SE (component: Networking). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 7u301, 8u291, 11.0.11, 16.0.1; Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition: 20.3.2 and 21.1.0. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition accessible data. Note: This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. This vulnerability does not apply to Java deployments, typically in servers, that load and run only trusted code (e.g., code installed by an administrator). CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.1 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2341 is a low-severity Java networking vulnerability that can expose limited data. It mainly matters where users run untrusted sandboxed Java Web Start applications or applets. Oracle states typical server deployments running only trusted administrator-installed Java code are not affected by this issue.

Executive priority

Treat this as routine patch governance, not an emergency, unless the organization still supports legacy client-side Java sandbox workflows. Prioritize affected endpoints or products that execute untrusted Java content, then close remaining exposure through normal Java update cycles.

Technical view

The flaw affects Java SE 7u301, 8u291, 11.0.11, 16.0.1 and GraalVM Enterprise Edition 20.3.2 and 21.1.0. It is remotely reachable over multiple protocols, requires no attacker authentication, has high attack complexity, requires user interaction, and affects confidentiality only.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in legacy client-side Java environments that still rely on the Java sandbox for untrusted internet-delivered code. Standard backend Java services are lower concern if they run only trusted code installed by administrators, matching Oracle's applicability note.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Successful attack requires user interaction and a difficult exploitation path, with impact limited to unauthorized read access to a subset of accessible Java or GraalVM data.

Researcher notes

The key triage point is applicability. Oracle limits this issue to sandboxed Java deployments loading untrusted code, typically Java Web Start or applets. The CVSS vector confirms network reachability, no privileges, required user interaction, high complexity, and confidentiality-only impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle or operating-system Java security updates covering CVE-2021-2341.
  • Move affected Java and GraalVM versions off the listed vulnerable releases.
  • Disable or retire Java Web Start and applet workflows that run untrusted code.
  • Review vendor advisories for products bundling Java, including appliances and managed platforms.
  • Follow Oracle, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, or product-vendor guidance for supported fixed packages.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Java SE, OpenJDK, and GraalVM versions across clients, servers, and bundled products.
  • Identify any Java Web Start or applet use that loads untrusted internet code.
  • Confirm patched packages from Oracle, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, or relevant vendors are installed.
  • Check whether vendor products list CVE-2021-2341 as applicable or remediated.
  • Document server-side exclusions only where Java runs trusted administrator-installed code.
