CVE-2021-2329: Vulnerability in the Oracle XML DB component of Oracle Database Server.

Vulnerability in the Oracle XML DB component of Oracle Database Server. Supported versions that are affected are 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1 and 19c. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker having Create Any Procedure, Create Public Synonym privilege with network access via Oracle Net to compromise Oracle XML DB. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle XML DB. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.2 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a high-severity Oracle Database XML DB flaw. An attacker already holding powerful database privileges and Oracle Net access could compromise the XML DB component and affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. It is not a casual internet bug, but it matters in environments with broad privileged database access.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for production databases holding sensitive or business-critical data, especially where privileged account control is weak. Treat this as a high-impact privileged-path vulnerability rather than broad unauthenticated exposure.

Technical view

CVE-2021-2329 affects Oracle XML DB in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1, and 19c. The CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, requiring high privileges including Create Any Procedure and Create Public Synonym via Oracle Net.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to affected Oracle Database Enterprise Edition deployments where Oracle XML DB is present and privileged users can connect through Oracle Net. Risk rises when powerful database privileges are broadly assigned or administrative network access is weakly segmented.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation is described as easy once the attacker has high privileges and Oracle Net access, so insider misuse or compromise of privileged database accounts is the main concern.

Researcher notes

The record provides no CWE and no public exploit evidence in the supplied bundle. Analysis should focus on version applicability, Oracle CPU mapping, privilege grants, Oracle Net reachability, and whether XML DB is enabled or materially exposed in the environment.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle July 2021 CPU guidance or later supported security updates.
  • Inventory affected Oracle Database Enterprise Edition versions.
  • Restrict Oracle Net access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Remove Create Any Procedure and Create Public Synonym where unnecessary.
  • Monitor privileged database accounts for unusual XML DB activity.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether instances run 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1, or 19c.
  • Verify Oracle July 2021 CPU or later applicable patch status.
  • Review grants for Create Any Procedure and Create Public Synonym.
  • Check network controls limiting Oracle Net reachability.
  • Validate XML DB exposure against Oracle guidance.
