CVE-2021-22898: curl 7.7 through 7.76.1 suffers from an information disclosure when the `-t` command line option, known as...

curl 7.7 through 7.76.1 suffers from an information disclosure when the `-t` command line option, known as `CURLOPT_TELNETOPTIONS` in libcurl, is used to send variable=content pairs to TELNET servers. Due to a flaw in the option parser for sending NEW_ENV variables, libcurl could be made to pass on uninitialized data from a stack based buffer to the server, resulting in potentially revealing sensitive internal information to the server using a clear-text network protocol.

Glexia's TakeAutomated analysis

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a low-severity curl/libcurl information leak. In specific TELNET use, the -t option or CURLOPT_TELNETOPTIONS can send uninitialized stack data to a TELNET server. The leak is only to the contacted server over clear text and requires that vulnerable feature to be used, limiting broad business urgency. Most organizations are exposed only where applications, scripts, appliances, or packaged products use vulnerable curl/libcurl versions with TELNET options. Ordinary HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, or API use is not described as affected in the provided sources. Treat as routine patch management unless TELNET-based automation with sensitive environments exists. It is a confidentiality issue with low CVSS severity, no cited active exploitation, and narrow conditions, but old curl versions should still be removed from managed assets. Mitigation focus: Upgrade curl/libcurl beyond the affected 7.7 through 7.76.1 range.; Apply distribution or vendor security updates for packaged curl dependencies.; Avoid TELNET option use with untrusted servers until updated..

Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor

Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
