CVE-2021-2271: Vulnerability in the Oracle Work in Process product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: Resource Excepti...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Work in Process product of Oracle E-Business Suite (component: Resource Exceptions). Supported versions that are affected are 12.1.3 and 12.2.3-12.2.8. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Work in Process. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized creation, deletion or modification access to critical data or all Oracle Work in Process accessible data as well as unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle Work in Process accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.1 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2271 affects Oracle Work in Process in Oracle E-Business Suite. A low-privileged user who can reach the application over HTTP could read, create, delete, or modify critical Work in Process data. The main business risk is unauthorized access to manufacturing or operational records, not service outage.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority patching and access-review item for Oracle EBS environments. The risk is unauthorized change or disclosure of important operational data by an authenticated low-privilege user.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable Resource Exceptions vulnerability in Work in Process, affecting versions 12.1.3 and 12.2.3 through 12.2.8. CVSS 3.1 is 8.1: network attack vector, low complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, unchanged scope, high confidentiality and integrity impact, no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in organizations running Oracle E-Business Suite with the Work in Process module on affected versions, especially where authenticated low-privilege users can access EBS over HTTP.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and this CVE is not marked as CISA KEV. Oracle’s scoring indicates exploitation is easy once a low-privileged attacker has network HTTP access.

Researcher notes

No CWE is provided in the bundle, and Oracle’s public description does not detail the vulnerable parameter or root cause. Validation should focus on version, patch level, HTTP exposure, privilege boundaries, and audit evidence rather than exploit reproduction.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle’s April 2021 Critical Patch Update or later applicable Oracle guidance.
  • Prioritize affected EBS Work in Process systems reachable over HTTP.
  • Restrict EBS HTTP access to trusted networks where feasible.
  • Review low-privilege account access to Work in Process functions.
  • Plan upgrades if running unsupported or hard-to-patch EBS versions.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Oracle E-Business Suite versions and enabled Work in Process components.
  • Confirm whether versions are 12.1.3 or 12.2.3 through 12.2.8.
  • Verify the April 2021 CPU or a superseding fix is applied.
  • Check which low-privilege roles can reach Resource Exceptions over HTTP.
  • Review relevant application audit logs for unauthorized Work in Process data changes.
