CVE-2021-2240: Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside I...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Outside In Filters). The supported version that is affected is 8.5.5. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Outside In Technology. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Outside In Technology accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle Outside In Technology accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle Outside In Technology. Note: Outside In Technology is a suite of software development kits (SDKs). The protocol and CVSS Base Score depend on the software that uses Outside In Technology. The CVSS score assumes that the software passes data received over a network directly to Outside In Technology, but if data is not received over a network the CVSS score may be lower. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.3 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a high-severity Oracle Outside In Technology issue affecting version 8.5.5. If an application exposes Outside In processing to HTTP data, an unauthenticated network attacker could read or change some accessible data and cause partial service disruption. Business urgency depends on where the SDK is embedded and whether untrusted network content reaches it.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority remediation item for internet-facing or partner-facing content-processing services. The impact spans confidentiality, integrity, and availability, but the real urgency depends on whether affected SDK processing is reachable from untrusted network input.

Technical view

Oracle describes an easily exploitable flaw in Outside In Filters, part of the Outside In SDK. The CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L. Oracle notes the score assumes software passes network data directly to Outside In; exposure may be lower for offline or non-network processing.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely in products or internal services embedding Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5, especially where HTTP-uploaded or network-supplied content is processed by Outside In. The sources do not identify downstream products, deployment patterns, or CPEs, so inventory must include bundled SDK usage.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not state active exploitation, and the bundle marks this CVE as not in KEV. Oracle says exploitation is unauthenticated, network-accessible via HTTP, and low complexity when network data is passed directly to Outside In. No exploit details are provided in the source bundle.

Researcher notes

Oracle’s note is central: CVSS depends on the hosting software’s data path. Validate reachability before assigning enterprise risk. The source bundle lacks CWE, downstream product names, exploit evidence, and fixed-version details, so avoid over-scoping without vendor confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle April 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for this CVE.
  • Identify applications bundling Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.5.
  • Apply vendor or Oracle-supported updates for affected deployments.
  • Limit untrusted HTTP content paths that feed Outside In processing.
  • Ask downstream software vendors whether their products include affected Outside In components.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory systems and applications using Oracle Outside In Technology.
  • Confirm whether version 8.5.5 is present.
  • Map whether HTTP or network-supplied data reaches Outside In Filters.
  • Check patch status against Oracle April 2021 CPU guidance.
  • Prioritize systems where unauthenticated users can submit processed content.
