Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2223 affects Oracle Receivables in Oracle E-Business Suite. A low-privileged user with HTTP network access could compromise Receivables data, including reading, creating, changing, or deleting critical information. The issue is high severity because it threatens financial data confidentiality and integrity, though availability impact is not reported.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority financial systems risk if affected Oracle Receivables versions remain in use. The main business concern is unauthorized access to or tampering with receivables data, not service outage. Prioritize patch verification and access reduction.

Technical view

The vulnerability is in the Receipts component of Oracle Receivables, affecting versions 12.1.1 through 12.1.3. CVSS 3.1 is 8.1 with network attack vector, low complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, high confidentiality and integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to organizations running Oracle E-Business Suite Oracle Receivables versions 12.1.1 through 12.1.3, especially where the application is reachable over HTTP by authenticated low-privileged users.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or other evidence of active exploitation. The vulnerability is described as easily exploitable by a low-privileged attacker over HTTP without user interaction, which raises practical risk for exposed deployments.

Researcher notes

Available public details identify product, component, affected versions, CVSS vector, and data impact, but do not include CWE classification, root cause details, exploit indicators, or specific patch identifiers in the provided bundle. Avoid assuming broader E-Business Suite exposure beyond Oracle Receivables Receipts.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle's April 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for CVE-2021-2223.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle-supported remediation for affected E-Business Suite systems.
  • Limit HTTP access to Oracle Receivables to trusted users and networks where feasible.
  • Review low-privileged Oracle E-Business Suite accounts for unnecessary access.
  • Monitor Receivables activity for unauthorized data creation, deletion, or modification.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Oracle E-Business Suite instances using Oracle Receivables.
  • Confirm whether Receivables versions 12.1.1, 12.1.2, or 12.1.3 are present.
  • Check patch status against Oracle's April 2021 Critical Patch Update.
  • Validate HTTP exposure paths to the Receipts component.
  • Review audit logs for unusual Receivables data access or modification.
