CVE-2021-2216: Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Multichanne...

Vulnerability in the PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools product of Oracle PeopleSoft (component: Multichannel Framework). Supported versions that are affected are 8.56, 8.57 and 8.58. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.1 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools has a medium-severity flaw in the Multichannel Framework. An unauthenticated attacker who can reach it over HTTP may compromise affected systems if a user interacts with the attack. Impact is limited to confidentiality and integrity, not availability, but business data could be read or changed.

Executive priority

Treat this as a timely patch-management item for PeopleSoft environments, especially externally reachable portals. It is not rated critical, but it can affect business data integrity and confidentiality without attacker credentials.

Technical view

CVE-2021-2216 affects PeopleTools 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58. The CVSS 3.1 score is 6.1 with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, required user interaction, changed scope, low confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where affected PeopleSoft PeopleTools versions are reachable over HTTP, including employee, partner, or internet-accessible PeopleSoft deployments.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited evidence of active exploitation. Oracle describes the issue as easily exploitable, unauthenticated over HTTP, but dependent on human interaction by someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

Public details in the bundle are limited to Oracle and CVE metadata. Avoid assuming a specific vulnerable endpoint or exploit method. Focus validation on version exposure, HTTP reachability, patch state, and whether user-interaction paths exist in the deployment.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle's April 2021 Critical Patch Update guidance for this CVE.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle-supported PeopleTools security update or upgrade path.
  • Limit HTTP access to PeopleSoft systems to trusted networks where feasible.
  • Prioritize exposed PeopleSoft deployments before internal-only systems.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory PeopleTools versions and flag 8.56, 8.57, and 8.58.
  • Confirm whether Multichannel Framework functionality is enabled or reachable over HTTP.
  • Verify Oracle CPU fixes are applied for affected PeopleTools instances.
  • Check access logs for suspicious HTTP activity around PeopleSoft endpoints.
