CVE-2021-2005: Vulnerability in the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (c...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: BI Platform Security). Supported versions that are affected are 12.2.1.3.0 and 12.2.1.4.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.7 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-2005 affects Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 12.2.1.3.0 and 12.2.1.4.0. An unauthenticated attacker with HTTP access could, with user interaction, cause limited unauthorized data exposure. The listed impact is confidentiality only, but Oracle notes attacks may affect additional products.

Executive priority

Treat this as a scheduled remediation item unless affected OBIEE is internet-facing or widely reachable internally. The expected impact is limited data exposure, but unauthenticated HTTP reachability and possible cross-product impact justify timely patch verification.

Technical view

The issue is in OBIEE BI Platform Security. CVSS 3.1 is 4.7: network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, changed scope, low confidentiality impact, no integrity or availability impact. No CWE is provided in the source bundle.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected OBIEE versions are reachable over HTTP, especially from untrusted networks. Risk depends on whether users can be induced to interact with attacker-controlled content or flows. The source bundle does not identify specific deployment configurations or dependent products.

Exploitation context

The CVE describes easy network exploitation without authentication, but requiring human interaction. CISA KEV status is false in the bundle, and no cited source here confirms active exploitation or public exploit availability.

Researcher notes

Important constraints are user interaction and confidentiality-only impact. The changed scope flag suggests effects can cross a security boundary, but the bundle does not explain the interaction mechanism, affected data subset, CWE, or exact fixed versions. Avoid assuming exploitability beyond Oracle's CVSS description.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify OBIEE 12.2.1.3.0 and 12.2.1.4.0 deployments.
  • Review Oracle January 2021 CPU guidance for vendor-provided fixes.
  • Apply the relevant Oracle security update where applicable.
  • Restrict HTTP access to OBIEE from untrusted networks.
  • Educate privileged users about unexpected OBIEE-related interaction prompts.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed OBIEE versions and patch levels.
  • Verify whether OBIEE is reachable over HTTP from untrusted networks.
  • Check change records against Oracle January 2021 CPU remediation.
  • Review access logs for unusual unauthenticated HTTP activity.
  • Confirm no business-critical dashboards broke after remediation.
