CVE-2021-1407: Cisco Unified Communications Products Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM), Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM & Presence Service (Unified CM IM&P), Cisco Unified Communications Manager Session Management Edition (Unified CM SME), and Cisco Unity Connection could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against an interface user. These vulnerabilities exist because the web-based management interface does not properly validate user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading an interface user to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the affected interface or access sensitive browser-based information.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a cross-site scripting issue in Cisco Unified Communications web management interfaces. An attacker does not need an account, but must convince an interface user to open a crafted link. Success could run script in that user's browser session or expose browser-accessible sensitive information.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority administrative interface risk. It is not described as wormable or actively exploited, but compromise of administrator browser context could affect sensitive communications infrastructure management.

Technical view

The bundle describes improper validation of user-supplied input in Cisco Unified CM, Unified CM IM&P, Unified CM SME, and Cisco Unity Connection web management interfaces. CVSS 3.1 is 6.1 with network access, low complexity, no privileges, required user interaction, changed scope, and low confidentiality/integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most relevant where Cisco Unified Communications web-based management interfaces are reachable by administrators or interface users. The bundle does not provide affected version ranges, so product and version exposure must be confirmed against Cisco's advisory.

Exploitation context

The supplied sources do not indicate active exploitation, and the CVE is not marked KEV. Exploitation requires social engineering an interface user into clicking a crafted link, then executing script in the affected interface context.

Researcher notes

The record describes XSS behavior, while the supplied CWE field lists CWE-89. Use the vendor advisory and CVE record as primary sources, and verify taxonomy before reporting. Avoid assuming affected versions because the bundle does not include them.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco's advisory for fixed releases and upgrade guidance.
  • Prioritize internet-reachable or broadly reachable management interfaces.
  • Restrict management interface access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Warn administrators about unsolicited links targeting management sessions.
  • Monitor Cisco guidance for product-specific remediation details.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco Unified Communications products named in the advisory.
  • Confirm running versions against Cisco's advisory matrix.
  • Identify whether management interfaces are internet or broadly network reachable.
  • Review access controls for administrative web interfaces.
  • Check logs for suspicious management-interface link activity.
