CVE-2021-1345: Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. These vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This CVE affects several Cisco Small Business RV routers. An attacker with valid administrator credentials could abuse the web management interface to run code as root or force the device to restart. The business risk is highest where these routers protect branch offices, small sites, or remote access paths.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority edge-device issue, especially for branch or small-office networks. The attacker needs administrator credentials, but compromise of those credentials could lead to root-level device control or service disruption.

Technical view

Cisco describes improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. Crafted HTTP requests from an authenticated remote administrator can trigger arbitrary code execution on the underlying OS or a denial-of-service reload. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.2 because privileges are required but impact is high.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers. Risk depends on whether the management interface is reachable by administrators or wider networks, and whether administrator credentials are compromised, shared, or weakly controlled.

Exploitation context

The supplied sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials and network access to the web management interface. Successful exploitation could give root-level control or disrupt routing through a device reload.

Researcher notes

The bundle identifies CWE-121 and authenticated remote attack over the management interface. Exact affected firmware versions, fixed releases, and workaround details are not included in the bundle summary, so Cisco’s advisory is required for precise remediation mapping.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco advisory for affected and fixed firmware details.
  • Apply Cisco-recommended firmware updates where available.
  • Restrict router management access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Remove unnecessary administrator accounts and rotate shared credentials.
  • Monitor for unexpected router reloads or administrative access.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory deployed Cisco RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers.
  • Confirm each device firmware against Cisco advisory guidance.
  • Verify the management interface is not broadly reachable.
  • Review administrator account lists and recent login activity.
  • Check operational logs for unexplained reloads or configuration changes.
