CVE-2021-1343: Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. These vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This CVE affects the web management interface on several Cisco Small Business RV routers. An attacker with valid administrator credentials could send crafted HTTP requests that execute code as root or restart the device, disrupting network access.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for offices, branches, or customers relying on affected Cisco RV routers. The attacker needs admin credentials, but impact can include full device compromise or network disruption.

Technical view

Cisco reports improper input validation in RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 router management interfaces. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.2, with network access, low complexity, high privileges required, no user interaction, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most relevant where affected RV-series routers are still deployed and their web-based management interface is reachable by administrators over a network. Risk increases if administrator credentials are weak, shared, reused, or exposed.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials, but successful exploitation could provide root-level code execution or cause a denial-of-service reload.

Researcher notes

CPE and exact affected version data are not provided in the bundle, so firmware-level exposure requires Cisco advisory confirmation. CWE-121 is listed, while Cisco’s summary attributes the issue to improper validation of management-interface input.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify deployed RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers.
  • Follow Cisco advisory guidance for supported updates, fixes, or mitigations.
  • Restrict management interface access to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Review administrator accounts and rotate credentials where exposure is suspected.
  • Monitor affected routers for unexpected reloads and suspicious administrator activity.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory router models and firmware against Cisco advisory applicability.
  • Confirm whether web-based management is reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Review administrative account lists for unknown, stale, or shared credentials.
  • Check logs for unexpected management requests or device reloads.
  • Document compensating controls if vendor guidance cannot be immediately applied.
