CVE-2021-1341: Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. These vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects several Cisco Small Business RV routers. If an attacker already has valid administrator credentials, they could abuse the web management interface to run code as root or force the router to restart, disrupting connectivity.

Executive priority

Treat this as high priority for branch, small office, and edge networks using the listed Cisco RV routers. The attacker needs admin credentials, but successful compromise could affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability of network traffic.

Technical view

CVE-2021-1341 is an authenticated remote command execution and denial-of-service issue in the web-based management interface of Cisco RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers. Cisco attributes it to improper validation of user input. CVSS is 7.2 high.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected Cisco Small Business RV routers are still deployed and their web management interface is reachable. Risk increases if administrator credentials are shared, stale, reused, or compromised.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials and crafted HTTP requests to the management interface. Successful exploitation may provide root-level code execution or cause router reloads.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and Cisco advisory metadata in the supplied bundle. Do not assume unauthenticated exploitation, internet-scale exploitation, or a specific fixed version from these sources alone.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco advisory and apply vendor-provided fixed software or replacement guidance.
  • Restrict web management access to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Remove unnecessary admin accounts and rotate privileged credentials.
  • Monitor affected routers for unexpected reloads and authenticated management anomalies.
  • Plan compensating controls or replacement if Cisco provides no fixed software.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 devices.
  • Confirm firmware status against Cisco advisory guidance.
  • Verify management interfaces are not exposed outside approved administration paths.
  • Review administrator accounts for shared, stale, or compromised credentials.
  • Check device logs for unexpected reloads or suspicious authenticated management activity.
