CVE-2021-1316: Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Management Interface Command Injection Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to inject arbitrary commands that are executed with root privileges. These vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to a targeted device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on an affected device.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers have management-interface flaws that can let a logged-in administrator execute operating-system commands as root. This is serious because a compromised admin account could become full device compromise.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for perimeter and branch-office environments. The attacker needs admin credentials, but successful exploitation means root control of the router, which can affect traffic, availability, and trust boundaries.

Technical view

CVE-2021-1316 is an authenticated remote command injection issue in the web-based management interface, caused by improper validation of user-supplied input. CVSS 3.1 is 7.2 high, with network attack vector, high privileges required, no user interaction, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to affected Cisco Small Business RV Series routers where the web management interface is reachable by an attacker who has valid administrator credentials. The bundle does not provide affected firmware version ranges.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not indicate CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials and crafted HTTP requests to the management interface, with successful exploitation allowing root-level command execution.

Researcher notes

Key uncertainty is version scope: the bundle lists affected products but not precise firmware versions. Validation should focus on management interface exposure, administrative access paths, and Cisco advisory status rather than unauthenticated scanning assumptions.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco's advisory for fixed software, workarounds, and device-specific guidance.
  • Restrict web management access to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Remove internet exposure for affected router management interfaces.
  • Audit administrator accounts and rotate credentials where compromise is possible.
  • Prioritize replacement planning if vendor guidance shows no supported fixed firmware.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory RV016, RV042, RV042G, RV082, RV320, and RV325 routers.
  • Confirm whether web-based management is enabled and reachable.
  • Verify firmware status against the Cisco advisory.
  • Review administrator account list, recent logins, and configuration changes.
  • Check whether management access is restricted by network controls.
