CVE-2021-1206: Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. The vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device. Cisco has not released software updates that address these vulnerabilities.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2021-1206 affects the web management interface on specific Cisco Small Business RV routers. An attacker with valid administrator credentials could run code as root or force a device restart. Cisco’s advisory says no software updates were released for these vulnerabilities, so exposed or still-deployed devices need compensating controls and replacement planning.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority exposure-management issue for any listed router still in service. The main business risk is full compromise or outage of edge network equipment when administrator access is obtained.

Technical view

Improper validation of user input in the web-based management interface can be triggered by crafted HTTP requests. Impact includes arbitrary code execution as root or denial of service via unexpected reload. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.2 with high privileges required, network attack vector, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers where the management interface is reachable and administrator credentials are compromised, shared, or misused.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials, but successful exploitation has full device impact because code may run as root.

Researcher notes

The source bundle identifies CWE-121 and CVSS AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. Research should stay focused on authenticated management-interface input validation and asset exposure. Evidence is incomplete on fixed versions because Cisco is reported as not releasing updates.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco’s advisory for current vendor guidance before making changes.
  • Restrict management access to trusted administrative networks or VPN only.
  • Remove unused administrator accounts and rotate remaining administrator credentials.
  • Review whether affected routers should be replaced or retired.
  • Monitor for unexpected reloads and suspicious administrator activity.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory routers for RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W models.
  • Confirm whether web management is reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Review administrator account lists for unknown or shared accounts.
  • Check logs for unexpected reloads or unusual administrator sessions.
  • Document any affected device lacking a vendor software update.
