CVE-2021-1195: Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. The vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device. Cisco has not released software updates that address these vulnerabilities.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers. An attacker with valid administrator credentials could use the web management interface to run code as root or crash the device. Cisco stated it had not released software updates for these vulnerabilities.

Executive priority

Prioritize this as a high-risk legacy-router issue. The privilege requirement lowers likelihood, but root code execution and denial of service on edge equipment can affect business connectivity and security posture, especially because no Cisco update is identified in the provided sources.

Technical view

CVE-2021-1195 covers improper input validation in the web-based management interface of listed Cisco Small Business routers. The attack is network-reachable, low complexity, requires high privileges, and can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Cisco describes possible root-level arbitrary code execution or unexpected reload causing denial of service.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations still running the affected Cisco Small Business RV models with reachable web-based management interfaces. Risk is materially higher where administrator credentials are shared, stale, or compromised.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited evidence of active exploitation. Cisco says exploitation requires valid administrator credentials and crafted HTTP requests to the management interface.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are authenticated administrator access and management-interface reachability. The provided sources identify CWE-121 and CVSS 3.1 score 7.2. Evidence is insufficient to claim public exploitation, patch availability, or affected firmware version ranges beyond the named products.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco’s advisory for current vendor guidance and product status.
  • Inventory affected RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers.
  • Remove stale administrator accounts and rotate exposed administrator credentials.
  • Restrict management interface access to trusted administrators and networks.
  • Plan replacement or decommissioning where unsupported risk is unacceptable.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether any listed Cisco RV models remain deployed.
  • Check whether web management is reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Review administrator account lists for stale or shared credentials.
  • Correlate router logs for unexpected reloads or unauthorized admin activity.
  • Document compensating controls because Cisco listed no software updates.
