CVE-2021-1183: Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers Management Interface Remote Command Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause an affected device to restart unexpectedly. The vulnerabilities are due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user on the underlying operating system or cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have valid administrator credentials on the affected device. Cisco has not released software updates that address these vulnerabilities.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This Cisco router issue lets someone with administrator credentials abuse the web management interface to run code as root or force a reboot. The main business risk is compromise or outage of small-office network edge devices. Cisco reported no software updates for these vulnerabilities.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for environments still using these routers, especially at branch offices or small sites. The issue requires administrator credentials, but device compromise can affect network availability and trust. Because Cisco reported no software updates, exposure reduction and replacement planning matter.

Technical view

CVE-2021-1183 covers multiple improper input validation flaws in the web-based management interface of Cisco RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers. An authenticated remote administrator can send crafted HTTP requests, causing root-level code execution or denial of service. CVSS v3.1 is 7.2 high with PR:H.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to affected Cisco Small Business RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers where attackers can reach the management interface and obtain valid administrator credentials. Internet-reachable management interfaces raise urgency, but the source bundle does not state exposure prevalence.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials, but successful exploitation can provide root-level execution or cause device reloads. No exploit details are needed for validation.

Researcher notes

The provided evidence supports authenticated remote code execution and DoS through crafted HTTP requests to the management interface. The bundle identifies CWE-121 and CVSS 7.2. It does not provide fixed versions, exploit prevalence, or public exploitation evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco advisory for current vendor guidance before making changes.
  • Disable internet exposure of the web management interface where possible.
  • Restrict management access to trusted administrative networks or VPN paths.
  • Review and harden administrator credentials for affected routers.
  • Plan replacement or isolation if no fixed Cisco software is available.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco RV110W, RV130, RV130W, and RV215W routers.
  • Confirm whether the web management interface is reachable remotely.
  • Verify administrator accounts, password age, and access controls.
  • Review device logs for unexpected admin activity or unexplained reloads.
  • Compare deployed devices against Cisco advisory affected products.
