CVE-2020-3551: Cisco Identity Services Engine Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the interface of an affected device. The vulnerability exists because the web-based management interface does not properly validate user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user of an affected interface to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the affected interface or access sensitive, browser-based information.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Cisco ISE has a medium-severity web management interface XSS issue. An attacker does not need an account, but must convince an interface user to click a crafted link. Success could run script in that user's browser context and expose browser-accessible information.

Executive priority

Treat this as moderate priority. It is not a wormable infrastructure takeover, but Cisco ISE is security-critical, and successful XSS against administrators can affect trust in identity and network access operations.

Technical view

CVE-2020-3551 is CWE-79 in Cisco Identity Services Engine Software's web-based management interface. The issue is improper validation of user-supplied input. CVSS 3.1 is 6.1: network exploitable, low complexity, no privileges, user interaction required, changed scope, low confidentiality and integrity impact, no availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to organizations running Cisco Identity Services Engine Software with users who access its web management interface. The source bundle does not identify affected or fixed versions, so version-specific exposure must be confirmed against Cisco's advisory.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show known active exploitation, and the CVE is not listed as KEV. Exploitation requires social engineering an interface user into clicking a crafted link, then executing script in the affected interface context.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are unauthenticated attacker, required user interaction, and browser-context impact. The bundle lacks affected-version and fixed-version detail, so researchers should avoid overclaiming scope and should anchor validation to Cisco advisory data.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco's advisory for affected releases and fixed software guidance.
  • Upgrade or patch affected Cisco ISE deployments according to Cisco guidance.
  • Limit web management interface access to trusted administrative networks where feasible.
  • Warn ISE administrators not to follow unexpected management-interface links.
  • Monitor Cisco updates if version or remediation details remain unclear.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco ISE Software deployments and their management interface exposure.
  • Compare installed versions with Cisco's advisory for affected and fixed releases.
  • Confirm who has access to the ISE web management interface.
  • Review proxy, email, and browser telemetry for suspicious ISE-related links.
  • Avoid validation methods that require clicking untrusted crafted links.
