CVE-2020-3466: Cisco DNA Center Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco DNA Center software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a user of the interface of an affected device. The vulnerabilities exist because the web-based management interface on an affected device does not properly validate user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a user of the interface to click a crafted link. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the affected interface or access sensitive, browser-based information.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Cisco DNA Center had web interface XSS flaws that could let an outside attacker run script in an administrator's browser if that user clicks a crafted link. Business impact is mainly account/session abuse or browser-exposed data loss, not direct system takeover.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority management-plane issue. It is not reported as actively exploited, but it targets administrator browser sessions and should be handled in normal security maintenance, faster if the interface is widely reachable.

Technical view

CVE-2020-3466 is CWE-79 in Cisco DNA Center's web-based management interface. Improper validation of user-supplied input enables unauthenticated remote XSS with required user interaction, changed scope, and low confidentiality and integrity impact. CVSS v3.0 score is 4.7.

Likely exposure

Organizations running Cisco DNA Center are relevant, especially where administrators access the management interface from browsers that can receive external links. The source bundle does not identify specific affected versions.

Exploitation context

No KEV listing or cited source indicates active exploitation. Exploitation requires persuading a user of the DNA Center interface to click a crafted link, which limits reliability but still matters for privileged administrators.

Researcher notes

The bundle confirms XSS behavior, CVSS, CWE, and affected product family. It does not provide affected version ranges, patch versions, or workaround text, so validation should rely on Cisco's advisory and local asset inventory.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Cisco's advisory for affected releases and fixed software guidance.
  • Prioritize remediation for internet-reachable or broadly reachable management interfaces.
  • Restrict DNA Center management access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Train administrators to avoid unsolicited links while logged into management tools.
  • Monitor vendor guidance if exact version exposure is unclear.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all Cisco DNA Center deployments and software versions.
  • Compare deployed versions against Cisco's advisory.
  • Confirm the management interface is not broadly exposed.
  • Review logs for suspicious administrator browser activity around the interface.
  • Verify compensating access controls are enforced for management access.
