CVE-2020-3314: Cisco AMP for Endpoints Mac Connector Software File Scan Denial of Service Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the file scan process of Cisco AMP for Endpoints Mac Connector Software could cause the scan engine to crash during the scan of local files, resulting in a restart of the AMP Connector and a denial of service (DoS) condition of the Cisco AMP for Endpoints service. The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of specific file attributes. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by providing a crafted file to a user of an affected system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the Cisco AMP for Endpoints service to crash, resulting in missed detection and logging of the potentially malicious file. Continued attempts to scan the file could result in a DoS condition of the Cisco AMP for Endpoints service.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2020-3314 affects Cisco AMP for Endpoints Mac Connector. A crafted local file can crash the file scanning engine, restarting the connector and creating a denial-of-service condition. The main business concern is a temporary blind spot: the malicious file may not be detected or logged while repeated scans keep disrupting protection.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate endpoint-protection reliability issue. It is not documented here as remotely exploitable or actively exploited, but it can reduce visibility on affected Macs and should be remediated through vendor-confirmed updates.

Technical view

The flaw is insufficient validation of specific file attributes in the Mac Connector file scan process. Exploitation requires a user on an affected system to receive or interact with a crafted file. Successful exploitation can crash the AMP service, impair availability, and cause missed detection and logging for that file.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running Cisco AMP for Endpoints Mac Connector on macOS systems. The source bundle does not provide affected version ranges, so teams must confirm installed versions against Cisco’s advisory or support guidance.

Exploitation context

The CVSS vector is local attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction required. CISA KEV status is false in the provided bundle, and no cited source here supports active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Evidence supports CWE-20 input validation leading to scan-engine crash and missed detection/logging. The bundle does not include fixed versions, workaround details, or exploit-in-the-wild confirmation. Avoid assuming broader Cisco Secure Endpoint impact beyond the Mac Connector named by the advisory.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco’s advisory for affected and fixed Mac Connector releases.
  • Inventory macOS endpoints running Cisco AMP for Endpoints Mac Connector.
  • Prioritize updates where endpoint telemetry is operationally critical.
  • Monitor for repeated AMP Connector crashes or restart loops.
  • Escalate suspicious files that coincide with scan failures.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm Mac Connector versions against Cisco’s affected-version guidance.
  • Review endpoint logs for connector crashes during file scans.
  • Verify AMP service remains running after scanning normal local files.
  • Check whether detections and file logging continue after restart events.
  • Document systems where version status cannot be confirmed.
