CVE-2020-3293: Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Stack Overflow Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV320 and RV325 Series Routers and Cisco Small Business RV016, RV042, and RV082 Routers could allow an authenticated, remote attacker with administrative privileges to execute arbitrary code on an affected device. The vulnerabilities are due to insufficient boundary restrictions on user-supplied input to scripts in the web-based management interface. An attacker with administrative privileges that are sufficient to log in to the web-based management interface could exploit each vulnerability by sending crafted requests that contain overly large values to an affected device, causing a stack overflow. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the device to crash or allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Cisco Small Business RV routers have web management flaws that can let a logged-in administrator crash the device or run code as root. The attacker already needs admin-level access, so the main business risk is compromised admin credentials, exposed management interfaces, or insider misuse leading to router takeover.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority for environments still using these routers. It is not clearly internet-wormable from the provided evidence because admin privileges are required, but successful exploitation could give root-level control over network edge equipment.

Technical view

CVE-2020-3293 covers stack overflows in web-based management scripts for Cisco RV320, RV325, RV016, RV042, and RV082 routers. Insufficient boundary restrictions on user input let an authenticated remote administrative user send oversized values, potentially causing denial of service or arbitrary code execution with root privileges.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected Cisco Small Business RV routers are still deployed and their web-based management interface is reachable by administrators, especially from broad internal networks or the internet. The vulnerability requires administrative privileges.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Public sources support authenticated remote exploitation with administrative privileges, but not unauthenticated exploitation or confirmed exploitation in the wild.

Researcher notes

The weakness is categorized as CWE-119 and is triggered by oversized user-supplied values in web management scripts. Validation should stay defensive: identify affected models, firmware status, management-plane reachability, and evidence of admin compromise or device instability.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco’s advisory for fixed software, workarounds, and model-specific guidance.
  • Restrict web management access to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Review and harden administrator accounts, passwords, and MFA options where available.
  • Remove or replace affected routers that cannot receive vendor-supported fixes.
  • Monitor router stability and administrative access for suspicious changes.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco RV320, RV325, RV016, RV042, and RV082 routers.
  • Confirm firmware versions against Cisco’s advisory guidance.
  • Verify web management is not exposed to untrusted networks.
  • Review admin login history for unexpected access.
  • Check for unexplained router crashes or configuration changes.
