CVE-2020-3211: Cisco IOS XE Software Web UI Command Injection Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the web UI of Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system of an affected device. The vulnerability is due to improper input sanitization. An attacker who has valid administrative access to an affected device could exploit this vulnerability by supplying a crafted input parameter on a form in the web UI and then submitting that form. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the device, which could lead to complete system compromise.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw lets an already-authenticated administrator use Cisco IOS XE’s web UI to run operating-system commands as root. That can mean full control of the device. It is serious, but the provided sources say exploitation requires valid administrative access and do not show confirmed active exploitation.

Executive priority

Treat this as high priority for network infrastructure, especially where management interfaces are reachable. The attacker needs admin credentials, but successful exploitation can fully compromise the device with root-level command execution.

Technical view

CVE-2020-3211 is a Cisco IOS XE web UI command injection issue caused by improper input sanitization. A remote attacker with high privileges can submit crafted form input through the web UI and execute arbitrary commands as root on the underlying operating system.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on Cisco IOS XE devices, specifically the listed IOS XE Software 16.10.1, where the web UI is enabled and reachable by administrative users over the network.

Exploitation context

The bundle marks KEV as false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation. Exploitation requires valid administrative access, network reachability to the web UI, and no user interaction.

Researcher notes

The available evidence supports authenticated command injection in IOS XE web UI with CVSS 7.2, PR:H, and root impact. The bundle does not provide exploit telemetry, workaround details, or a complete affected-version matrix beyond IOS XE 16.10.1.

Mitigation direction

  • Check Cisco’s advisory for affected releases and fixed IOS XE guidance.
  • Prioritize remediation for internet-reachable or broadly reachable management interfaces.
  • Restrict web UI management access to trusted admin networks or VPN paths.
  • Review administrative accounts and remove unnecessary privileged access.
  • Monitor Cisco guidance for any updated workarounds or corrected software details.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Cisco IOS XE devices and versions, especially 16.10.1.
  • Confirm whether the web UI is enabled on each device.
  • Verify management interfaces are not exposed beyond trusted administrators.
  • Review privileged account lists for stale or unnecessary access.
  • Check Cisco advisory applicability against deployed IOS XE releases.
