CVE-2020-3111: Cisco IP Phone Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the Cisco Discovery Protocol implementation for the Cisco IP Phone could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to remotely execute code with root privileges or cause a reload of an affected IP phone. The vulnerability is due to missing checks when processing Cisco Discovery Protocol messages. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted Cisco Discovery Protocol packet to the targeted IP phone. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to remotely execute code with root privileges or cause a reload of an affected IP phone, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. Cisco Discovery Protocol is a Layer 2 protocol. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be in the same broadcast domain as the affected device (Layer 2 adjacent).

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw could let someone already on the same local network segment as vulnerable Cisco IP phones take control of a phone as root or crash it. The business risk is disruption to voice service and potential foothold inside trusted network zones, especially where voice networks are reachable from untrusted ports. Organizations using Cisco IP phones with Cisco Discovery Protocol enabled may be exposed if attackers can reach the same broadcast domain. The source bundle lists affected versions as unspecified, so exposure depends on Cisco advisory model and software matching. Treat as high priority where voice networks are reachable from untrusted devices. It is not described as internet-exploitable, but root-level phone compromise and service disruption justify prompt inventory and vendor-guided remediation. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco advisory for affected models and fixed software guidance.; Prioritize remediation for phones on shared or weakly controlled network segments.; Restrict untrusted access to voice VLANs and phone broadcast domains..
